15-Year Concession Adds Dry Bulk and Container Handling at GCD Yard
News: Western Carriers has expanded its multimodal logistics network with the inauguration of a General Cargo Terminal in Kolkata at the GCD Yard of the Kolkata Dock System.
Operating under a 15-year agreement with the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority, the facility marks the company’s first operational base on India’s east coast.
The terminal is designed to handle dry bulk, break-bulk and container cargo, including 20-foot, 40-foot and specialised containers. An initial civil-development investment of approximately ₹13.68 crore has been estimated for the facility. The Kolkata cargo terminal is connected to the Eastern Railway network through the Sealdah and Budge Budge sections and also benefits from road and inland-waterway connectivity. Phase II development is expected to begin within 90 days to increase throughput and operational efficiency. For shippers and manufacturers in eastern India, the facility strengthens rail freight connectivity, supports multimodal cargo handling and could increase rail-based freight movement along the East-West corridor.
