VOC Port’s Tuticorin Terminal Declared a “Green Terminal” After Full Electrification

VOC Port's Tuticorin Terminal Goes Green

News: Tuticorin International Container Terminal (TICT) at V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port has been declared a green terminal after electrifying 100% of its operational equipment.

Union Shipping Secretary Vijay Kumar announced the designation on October 22, 2026, during a review of port projects worth about Rs 18,000 crore, and flagged off 13 electric Internal Transfer Vehicles for container handling at the terminal.

The terminal has an annual cargo capacity of 82 million tonnes, according to VOC Port Chairman Sushanta Kumar Purohit. The review also covered a pilot methanol bunkering and refuelling facility, a green hydrogen pilot project, and wind energy facilities, together valued at over Rs 18,400 crore, alongside an outer harbour project costing more than Rs 15,000 crore that is expected to add 4 million tonnes a year of capacity and position Tamil Nadu as a major transshipment hub for southern India.

The green terminal label covers only the terminal’s own equipment and does not extend to fuel used by visiting ships. For shipping lines and cargo owners increasingly weighing the carbon footprint of their supply chains, a fully electrified container yard gives VOC Port a cleaner-gateway argument relative to peers, while the outer harbour expansion points to added capacity on India’s southern coast over the medium term.
