Vadhavan Port Set to Boost India’s Maritime Trade
News: India is fast-tracking the Vadhavan Port project in Maharashtra as part of its strategy to expand maritime capacity, improve logistics and strengthen global trade connectivity.
Approved in June 2024 with an estimated investment of ₹76,220 crore, the greenfield deep-draft port in Palghar will be designed to handle ultra-large container vessels and up to 298 million metric tonnes annually.
Major supporting infrastructure includes a 10.14-km breakwater, 32.74-km road link and 22.22-km rail connectivity. The government is also modernising existing Maharashtra ports, expanding cargo-handling capacity and improving automation, connectivity and safety infrastructure.
The integrated development is expected to strengthen EXIM trade, boost coastal shipping, reduce dependence on foreign transshipment hubs and support port-led industrial clusters. Vadhavan Port is set to become a major gateway for India’s growing maritime and logistics ambitions.
