Russia, India Advance Arctic Shipping Partnership
News: Russia has approved a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India to strengthen maritime cargo transportation along the Northern Sea Route (NSR), marking a significant step in expanding Arctic logistics and bilateral trade cooperation.
The agreement authorises Rosatom to sign the MoU on behalf of the Russian government, supporting closer collaboration on developing cargo movement through the Arctic corridor.
Rosatom, which manages the Northern Sea Route and Russia’s nuclear-powered icebreaker fleet, will work with India to improve Arctic shipping connectivity. India’s growing interest in the NSR is driven by increasing imports of Russian oil and gas from the Yamal Peninsula and its broader strategy to diversify global logistics routes. The partnership also includes cooperation in icebreaker construction, Arctic workforce training, and long-term supply chain development, strengthening India’s role in emerging polar trade corridors.
