Container and Dry Cargo Volumes Drive 19% Year-on-Year Growth
News: Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ) handled a record 50 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo in August 2026, a 19% increase over the same month last year.
Container volumes rose 15% year-on-year and dry cargo expanded 25%. Year-to-date cargo through August reached 234.4 MMT, up 16% year-on-year, with dry cargo up 17% and containers up 15%.
Transshipment operations at Vizhinjam and Colombo were cited as key growth drivers, alongside gains in liquid and coastal cargo. Logistics rail volume for August reached 54,131 TEUs, a 6% sequential rise, though year-to-date rail volumes of 250,461 TEUs were down 33% year-on-year.
APSEZ is targeting 1 billion tonnes of annual cargo capacity by FY31. Sustained double-digit cargo growth at India’s largest private port operator signals continued strength in India’s container and bulk trade flows, and points to Vizhinjam’s growing role as a transshipment hub reducing reliance on foreign ports like Colombo and Singapore for Indian cargo.
