VOC Port Announces ₹754 Crore Infrastructure Push
News: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated or laid foundation stones for eight projects worth roughly Rs 7.54 billion (Rs 754 crore) at V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu.
The centrepiece is a Rs 5.17 billion container terminal converting Berth No. 7, adding a 370-metre quay, three quay cranes, and nine rubber-tyred gantry cranes, which brings 0.42 million TEUs of annual capacity and raises draft to 14.20 metres for larger vessels.
The remaining projects target green energy and cargo evacuation: a 3 MW green hydrogen station, green methanol bunkering tanks with a 2.8-km pipeline, a 2 MW solar plant, electric buses for internal mobility, a 3.37-km four-lane access road, a truck parking terminal for about 230 vehicles, and mechanised fertiliser-bagging equipment.
For exporters and importers in southern Tamil Nadu, the added container capacity and larger-vessel draft should ease a real bottleneck, while the truck parking terminal and access road target the congestion and queuing that have historically slowed inland cargo evacuation at VOC Port.
