Russia Explores Rail Corridor to India Amid Rising Maritime Risks

Russia Eyes Rail Route to India

Russia Explores Rail Corridor to India

News: Russia Explores Rail Corridor to India through Central Asia and Iran as geopolitical tensions increase risks along key maritime routes such as the Bosphorus and Strait of Hormuz. The move reflects Moscow’s growing focus on diversifying trade routes and reducing dependence on vulnerable sea lanes.

The proposed route could complement the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and India’s Chabahar connectivity plans, creating stronger Eurasian logistics links.

Rising India-Russia trade, particularly in crude oil, coal, fertilisers and other commodities, is adding urgency to improved transport connectivity. Russia is also pursuing cooperation with India on the Northern Sea Route and the Vladivostok-Chennai corridor. While the rail link remains at the discussion stage, it highlights a broader shift toward multimodal supply chains and strategic route diversification between the two countries.
