First Private Rail Freight Corridor
News: Assam has launched the Northeast’s first privately developed rail freight corridor, built by entrepreneur Kanak Deka. The project centres on the BRGB Gati Shakti Railway Terminal in Kamalpur, developed under the PM Gati Shakti framework.
Spread across nearly 300 bighas, the terminal involves an initial ₹250 crore investment with a broader ₹500 crore commitment.
The facility connects directly to the Indian Railways network and operates with two privately acquired freight trains. Major companies including Tata Group and Hindustan Unilever are using the corridor.
The project is expected to reduce logistics costs, strengthen Northeast connectivity and generate around 1,000 jobs.
