Meghalaya Ships First Outbound Freight Rake
News: The Northeast Frontier Railway has marked a major milestone by dispatching Meghalaya’s first-ever outbound freight rake from Mendipathar, formally integrating the state into India’s rail freight network.
A full rake of 42 covered wagons carrying coal was loaded on December 28 and sent to Jalalgarh, completing loading in just over 8.5 hours, reflecting strong operational coordination.
Mendipathar—Meghalaya’s only railway station—had earlier handled its first inbound freight in February last year. Between February and December 2025, it managed 29 mini-rakes and six full rakes.
Railway officials say outbound freight services will boost Meghalaya’s economy, improve market access, and lower logistics costs, especially for remote and hilly regions.
