Lok Sabha Clears Indian Ports Bill 2025
News: The Lok Sabha on Tuesday passed the Indian Ports Bill, 2025, replacing the 115-year-old Indian Ports Act, 1908, with a modern framework to boost trade efficiency, cut logistics costs, and strengthen India’s global maritime position.
Introduced by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, the bill streamlines port procedures, promotes digitalization, transparent tariff policies, and dispute resolution, while giving ports greater autonomy with accountability.
It emphasizes green initiatives, pollution control, and disaster management in line with MARPOL conventions.
The bill encourages coastal shipping, inland waterways integration, multimodal transport, and PPP investments, while a strengthened Maritime State Development Council will coordinate port growth.
Expected outcomes include job creation, improved infrastructure for exporters and MSMEs, and environmentally sustainable, globally competitive ports.
