India Launches Barrier-Free Tolling
News: India has launched its first barrier-less Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system on the Surat–Bharuch stretch of NH-48 in Gujarat, aiming to modernise highway movement and improve logistics efficiency.
The system uses FASTag and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) to automatically deduct toll charges without requiring vehicles to stop.
The new setup is expected to reduce congestion, travel time, fuel consumption and emissions while improving traffic flow. For logistics operators, the benefits include faster cargo movement, lower operating costs, improved fleet utilisation and more predictable transit schedules.
The government sees MLFF tolling as a major step toward digital, technology-driven highway infrastructure, with potential expansion to other national highways if the pilot proves successful.
