India to Set Up New Transport Authority
News: India is set to create a federal Transport Planning Authority to streamline infrastructure projects across aviation, highways, shipping, rail, and urban planning, working closely with PM Modi’s office.
The body aims to reduce wasteful spending, accelerate approvals, and align ministries to ensure project viability, addressing inefficiencies seen in underused airports and metro systems.
Inspired by Seoul and London’s transport authorities, it seeks to prevent silos that have hindered PM Gati Shakti’s 2021 initiative.
With 140 airports and multiple metro networks underperforming, the authority will prioritize high-demand projects, cut duplication, and enhance connectivity, ensuring infrastructure matches actual usage while supporting India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
