India Canada FTA Talks Back on Track
News: India and Canada have agreed to restart negotiations on a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) to boost bilateral trade to USD 50 billion by 2030.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said the renewed talks reflect restored trust and will strengthen business and investor confidence.
Both sides see major opportunities in critical minerals, processing technologies, nuclear energy and diversified supply chains. FTA talks had been frozen since 2023 due to diplomatic tensions over allegations made by then PM Justin Trudeau.
Before the pause, six rounds were held under the Early Progress Trade Agreement framework. India’s exports to Canada reached USD 4.22 billion in 2024–25. The renewed momentum follows PM Modi’s meeting with PM Mark Carney at the G7 summit.
