BCAS Eases Cargo Re-Screening Rules

News: In a major policy shift, the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has eased mandatory re-screening norms for transit air cargo in India.

Previously, all cargo switching aircraft at Indian airports required X-ray screening, causing delays and higher costs. The new guidelines allow bypassing redundant checks if secure protocols, such as a Transfer Cargo Security Hold Area (TCSHA) and security escorts, are in place.

High-risk or tampered cargo will still be screened. This move boosts India’s goal of becoming a regional transshipment hub, benefiting express logistics, e-commerce, and carriers like Air India and IndiGo.

Experts say it aligns India with global cargo standards and supports its target of handling 10 million tonnes of air cargo by 2030.
