April-September Volumes Up 7% as Flyover and Berth Upgrades Progress
News: Visakhapatnam Port cargo Authority handled a record 91.17 million tonnes (MMT) of cargo in 2025-26, compared with just 0.13 MMT in its first year of operations back in 1933.
For the April-September 2026 half, the port handled 46.14 MMT, a 7% increase over the same period last year.
The port is backing the growth with infrastructure upgrades, including a Rs 334.89 crore internal flyover system removing nine railway level crossings to improve internal connectivity, and berth mechanisation and operation-and-maintenance projects worth around Rs 400 crore, scheduled for commissioning by March 2027. The port’s deep-draft container facilities can already handle vessels up to 390 metres long with a permissible draft of up to 16 metres, and it runs RFID-based gate management and digital port-operation systems.
For bulk and container shippers on India’s east coast, sustained volume growth alongside internal connectivity and berth upgrades points to a port actively working through capacity constraints rather than running at the edge of its limits.
