US Tweaks Language in India Trade Factsheet

News: The United States has revised its factsheet on the proposed India–US trade deal, dropping references to tariff cuts on “certain pulses” and softening language on India’s planned $500 billion purchases of American goods.

Pulses—politically sensitive in India—were removed from the list of US farm products slated for tariff reductions, signalling possible resistance from New Delhi.

The wording on trade purchases was also diluted, changing from “committed” to “intends” and omitting agriculture.

The updated document further steps back from earlier claims that India would remove digital services taxes, now focusing on future digital trade negotiations. The changes follow criticism from Mallikarjun Kharge.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said sensitive sectors remain protected and the deal safeguards domestic interests.
